So you are ready for your newborn to have their very first photography session, GREAT! Here are a couple of things that you should not be worried about:
1. Oh No, She Fell Asleep! Newborns have very hectic schedules, all of that eating, diaper changes, and eye opening can really take a lot out of a baby. At your photoshoot, it is perfectly fine for the baby to fall asleep. If the baby feels loved and is warm enough, you will get a lot of different expressions while they sleep. Also, newborns can’t really do much except look adorable! If the photographer is patient enough, the baby will have a sleep, giving a bunch of different expressions, and will then be awake after a short nap and in a good mood. While the baby is asleep, it is the time for all of those great photos with mom and dad. These timeless shots of you holding your tiny baby with love and caring really make wonderful memories.
2. AHHHH, He’s Peeing Everywhere! Yet another thing that newborns do is go to the bathroom. And all babies will wait for that one inopportune moment when the diaper is off to let one fly. Every photographer should be understanding of this, it is a fact of life!
3. You Want to Eat Again?!?!? Remember the schedule, look cute, eat, nap, eat, diaper change, eat. Newborns grow before our very eyes, and that takes a lot of nutrition and feedings. Being in new and unfamiliar places can also make newborns want to eat, because this is something that they are familiar with, its a coping mechanism. Taking a little time from the photoshoot to feed your baby will not break the rhythm, it might just make everything go smoother.
4. Why Are You Crying, This is Just the 27th Outfit? What is your tolerance for changing clothes? Now take that tolerance and divide it by 100, and this is what your baby is feeling. Newborns love to be warm and usually snuggled up in a blanket or with mom or dad. If every five minutes their warmth is stolen because they are being changed, they could and probably will get a little cranky. Also, this will be the first time that your baby will be bounced around with very little periods of calm. In their minds it is like having 50 relatives coming over and passing the baby to each other like a hot potato, add in the flashing lights and you have a recipe for disaster. But, your photographer should slow things down, make sure that the baby has a lot of down time , and should tell you the parents not to bring so many changes of clothes.
